TEHRAN - An Iranian man convicted of robbing and murdering five drivers was hanged in a prison in the southern port of Bandar Abbas, the Etemad newspaper reported Thursday.
The man was identified as Farshid Farighi, aged 21 and nicknamed "desert wolf". The hanging brought to at least 50 the number of executions carried out in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on press and witness reports.
In 2004 at least 159 people were executed in the Islamic republic -- the highest rate in the world after China -- according to Amnesty International.
Capital offences in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, apostasy, blasphemy, serious drug trafficking, repeated sodomy, adultery or prostitution, treason and espionage.
SMCCDI Note: The Islamic republic regime uses often false labels, such as, Hooligan, Murderer, rapist, Spy or Drug trafficker in order to qualify its armed opponents. Such policy helps its European and Asian partners in order to justify, vis a vis their public opinion, the continuation of business relations with a barbarian and repressive regime.
