TEHRAN - An Iranian man convicted of murdering a fellow prisoner during an escape attempt in July was hanged at a jail in the southwestern city of Shiraz, Etemad newspaper reported.

The man, who was not named by the daily, had been part of an abortive breakout from a prison in the Persian Gulf port of Bandar Abbas, the paper said. The hanging brought to at least 49 the number of executions carried out in Iran so far this year, according to an AFP tally based on press and witness reports.

In 2004 at least 159 people were executed in the Islamic republic -- the highest rate in the world after China, according to Amnesty International.

Capital offences in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, apostasy, blasphemy, serious drug trafficking, repeated sodomy, adultery or prostitution, treason and espionage.

SMCCDI Note: The Islamic republic regime uses often false labels, such as, Hooligan, Murderer, rapist, Spy or Drug trafficker in order to qualify its armed opponents. Such policy helps its European and Asian partners in order to justify, vis a vis their public opinion, the continuation of business relations with a barbarian and repressive regime.
